Brady's eyes

When I took Brady a couple of months back to his 3 year physical, much to our surprise, he failed his vision test.  He could see everything great with both eyes, same with just his left, but with only his right eye, he couldn't say what a single picture was.  We weren't sure if he really couldn't see, or if, being 3, he was bored with the test and didn't want to talk anymore.  Thus, we were referred to a pediatric opthamologist for further testing.  Naturally, there is 1 pediatric opthamologist in the area.  He is of course through the University of Michigan, which also means that you have to wait about 3-4 months to get an appt.  I was ok with that based on the fact that I have never questioned his vision.

Well, finally yesterday, our appointment day came.  My dear friend Wendy watched Bryce for me (thank heavens) and Brady and I headed to the hospital for his appointment.  I must say that it was so nice to be with Brady alone, and we had a really nice morning.  Dr. Sandall (who is very nice, but rather old, which makes me wonder if he is training another ped's opthamologist in the area) called us back and testing began.  Brady wouldn't sit in the exam chair alone, so on my lap it was.  We started the test, and low and behold, he couldn't depict a single picture out with his right eye.  I honestly was a little taken aback.  The dr. looks at me and says, 'Well, there certainly is a discrepancy."  So, on we went, the dr was wonderful.  Brady wore "fun" glasses, looked at "cool" lights etc. etc.  The dr. dilated Brady's eyes, and so on.  When all was said and done, Brady has moderate astigmatism in his right eye.  He has 80/20 vision in his right eye, and 20/20 in his left eye.   However, with both eyes, he has 20/20 vision, thus, no glasses (at this point).  We will have his eyes examined yearly to monitor his astigmatism, and make sure his eye isn't wandering, or getting lazy, and also make sure the left one is doing ok making up for the right.

My dad has severe astigmatism in his right eye, and it is genetic, so here we go.  I figure in the future, Brady will definitely need glasses.  I think he would be so cute in them too.  A little secret....deep down I was slightly dissapointed he didn't get glasses, just because he would be adorable.  Yet............I couldn't imagine how many pairs we would break or lose.  So, for now I am counting my blessings.

Brady is a very special little boy, and I am so blessed to be his mamma!!!
